Real Madrid and Liverpool have emerged as the first two teams to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The defending champions beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 on Tuesday night to book their place in the last eight.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the second half before Javier Pastore made it 1-1 for the home team. Casemiro’s deflected shot was the winning goal to ensure that Zidane’s men progressed on a 5-2 aggregate. However, PSG was down to ten men after Marco Veratti was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Liverpool played a goalless draw with Porto at Anfield. The Merseyside club won the first leg in Portugal 5-0 to advance to the next phase of the competition.
Real Madrid’s Ronaldo Breaks Former Teammates Record
Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo has equalled former Manchester United teammate, Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record. The defending champions beat Paris Saint Germain at the Parc des Princes stadium in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16.
Ronaldo’s goal against PSG means he has now scored in nine consecutive matches in the Champions League. Van Nistelrooy is the only player to achieve such feat in the competition. Ronaldo’s goal in Paris was his 14th in nine games for real Madrid this season.Van Nistelrooy only managed 12 goals by comparison. Ronaldo is now averaging a goal every 60 minutes in the Champions League.
However, Juventus beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 to progress to the quarterfinals of the competition. Tottenham struck first through Son-Hyeung Min but was cancelled out by Gonzalo Higuain in the second half. Paulo Dybala scored the winning goal to ensure Allegri’s men book a place in the next stage with a 4-3 aggregate. Manchester City lost at home to Fc Basel 2-1 but qualified to the next phase with a 5-2 win on aggregate.
